I was horrified to read that academics at Liverpool Hope University are being forced into a culture of presenteeism ("Edict curtailing freedom to work at home 'appals' staff", 2 July). Far from encouraging the development of a university community, this backward move into a Taylorist-style culture is likely to increase stress levels among lecturers, who already endure more stress-related illness than most other professional groups. Perhaps Liverpool Hope would like to introduce clocking in and clocking out, too, or an even more efficient system of control - electronic tagging?
