Foetuses undergoing operations have shown signs of stress, but an anaesthetised adult patient would respond in exactly the same way and clearly feel no pain. As one expert put it: 'Unless it can be shown that the foetus has a conscious appreciation of pain then its responses must still, essentially, be reflex.'
