ASSOCIATED BOARD OF THE ROYAL SCHOOLS OF MUSIC Jean Harvey, following her retirement as chief examiner, has taken up the post of international music consultant.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Peter Barker, director of executive education at the Theseus Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, has been appointed director of development.

UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM Maxwell Irvine, former principal and vice chancellor at Aberdeen, succeeds Sir Michael Thompson as vice chancellor and principal.

QUEEN MARY AND WESTFIELD COLLEGE The following have been appointed to readerships: Alison Etheridge, lecturer in mathematics and statistics at the University of Edinburgh; M. A. Curtis, head of MRC molecular pathogenesis group, department of oral microbiology at the school of medicine and dentistry; Praveen Anand, department of neurology; P. G. Kopelman, medical unit, school of medicine and dentistry.
