Appointments

UNIVERSITY OF ESSEX The following heads of department were appointed for three years from August 1: Neil Baker, biological and chemical sciences; Mike O'Mahony, electronic systems engineering; John Walter, history. Andrew Radford, head of language and linguistics for one year, will be succeeded in August 1997 for three years by Louisa Sadler.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD Anthony Ledwith, director of group research at Pilkington plc, has been appointed chairman of chemistry.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE W. Wakeham has been appointed pro rector (research contracts) for three years from October 1; G. Davies has been appointed pro rector (resources) for two years from January 1, 1997.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH James Cornewall-Walker has been appointed assistant director (catering services). He formerly worked for Scottish and Newcastle within Thistle Hotels; Catrin Tilley has been appointed director of development and alumni services, former deputy director of Charity Projects and Comic Relief.

UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN Graeme Roberts, head of the department of English, has been appointed dean of the faculty of arts and divinity.
