University of Wales, Cardiff

Adrian Thomas, head of the department of music, was awarded the Order of Merit for Polish Culture in Warsaw in recognition of his contribution to Polish music through publications, performances and broadcasts.

Royal Academy of Engineering. The Prince Philip Medal of the RAE was awarded to Charles Kao in recognition of his pioneering work with George Hockham on how to make glass fibres transmit data in the form of light, which transformed telecommunications.

Le Prix du Livre Corse

The prize was awarded to Stephen Wilson, reader in European history at the University of East Anglia, for his book on feuding and banditry in 19th-century Corsica.

Imperial College

The Beilby Prize for 1996, which is jointly administered by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Institute of Materials, the Society of Chemical Industry and the Royal Society of Chemistry, was awarded to Paul Luckham, department of chemical engineering for his work in the field of rheology, colloid science and biotechnology.
