John Self, reader in computing at Lancaster University, to a chair in knowledge-based systems; Christopher Wild, chief of the unit of environmental carcino-genesis at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, to a chair of molecular epidemiology; P. Michell, professor of advertising and marketing at Manchester Business School, to the chair in marketing and media; R. Watson, reader in the school of business and economic studies, to a chair in finance and accountancy; Inge Bates, senior lecturer, developmental chair in education and work; Stuart Ogden, senior lecturer, developmental chair in accounting and organisational analysis.

Personal chairs have been awarded to the following readers: Simon Baumberg, professor of bacterial genetics; Peter Bonsall, professor of transport planning; A.G. UNIVERSITY OF READING David Balding, honorary visiting fellow at the University of New South Wales, has been appointed professor of applied statistics.
