GRESHAM COLLEGE. The following appointments commenced on September 1: Tom Cannon, chief executive of Management Charter Initiative, Mercers' School Memorial professor of commerce; Colin Pillinger, head of the Planetary Sciences Research Institute at the Open University, Gresham professor of astronomy; Andreas Prindl, former chairman of Nomura Bank, provost of the college.

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW. F. Trevor Burke, senior lecturer in dental practice at the University of Manchester, has been appointed to the chair of dental primary care.

The following have been promoted to the rank of professor from October 1: Roger Adams, reader, professor of nucleic acid biochemistry; David Barry, reader, professor of molecular parasitology; John Briggs, senior lecturer, professor of geography; Anthony Fallick, reader, professor of isotope geosciences; Malcolm Hill, senior lecturer, professor of social work; Christian Kay, senior lecturer, professor of English language; Malcolm Kennedy, reader, professor of infection biology.

NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY. J. Lucas, former professor of English at Loughborough University of Technology; R. Rees, former reader in tumour biology and deputy director of the Institute of Cancer Studies at the University of Sheffield, research professor in the department of life sciences; A. Bargiela, professor of simulation modelling.

INSTITUTE OF CANCER RESEARCH. Jessica Corner, director of the centre for cancer and palliative care studies at the University of London, has been appointed to the chair of cancer nursing. The following readers have been promoted to professorships: Colin Cooper, chair in molecular biology; Martin Leach, chair in physics as applied to medicine; Steve Webb, chair in radiological physics.

UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ST MARTIN, LANCASTER. Pamela King, head of English, has been awarded a personal chair.
