Inge Bates, senior lecturer and director of the centre for the study of post-16 developments at the University of Sheffield, developmental chair in education and work; Peter Mackie, senior lecturer, professor of transport studies; Katie Wales, head of department at the University of London, professor of modern English language; Andrew Davies and Peter Howdle, senior lecturers, have been appointed professors of clinical education at Leeds General Infirmary and St James' University Hospital respectively; Stephen Morley, senior lecturer, professor in clinical psychology; John Dyson, professor of astronomy at the University of Manchester, chair of astronomy in the department of physics and astronomy.
The following principal lecturers have been appointed to professorships: Tony Hartley, professor of language engineering; John McKean, professor of architecture; Richard Mitchell, reader, professor of computing; Mike Tucker, poetics professor. Chairs were awarded to: Carolyn Miller, head of the nursing and midwifery research unit, professor of health studies; Howard Rush, head of research development, professor of innovation management; Brendan Neiland, senior lecturer, professor of painting.
