K. Johnson, associate professor in the department of surgical sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been appointed to the chair in companion animal studies.

Queen's University, Belfast

David Whan, former director of the industrial research laboratories at the University of Durham and co-ordinator of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's managed programme on catalysis and catalytic processes, is to be visiting professor.

Robert Gordon University

The title of professor has been conferred upon Daniel McStay, lecturer in the school of applied sciences.

Lancaster University

A personal chair in cancer studies has been awarded to Trevor McMillan, formerly at the Institute of Cancer Research in Surrey.

University of Bradford

The title of emeritus professor has been conferred on: Denis O'Kelly, professor of electrical power engineering (1962-96); Peter Robinson, professor of mathematics (1970-86); and Bill Shepherd, professor of electrical power applications (1967-96).

Staffordshire University

Tom Ruxton, dean of the school of engineering and advanced technology; Mike Goodwin, associate dean of the school of engineering and advanced technology; Brian Burrows, reader in mathematics in the school of computing.
