At-a-glance guide to every institution's performance in the 1996 RAE
These graphics, prepared by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, show the performance of every institution entered in the Research Assessment Exercise and their comparative size and research intensiveness.
For each institution, the pie diagram shows the percentage of staff entered for the RAE, ranging from 100 per cent for some specialist research institutions, to a small minority in the case of new universities and colleges of higher education. This diagram also gives the total academic staff for each institution.
The bar charts show the results in terms of the percentage of research-active staff in institutions in each of the seven categories of excellence. This means that they give an impression of the overall quality of the research-active staff of an institution and are not distorted by the presence of small highly-rated research teams.
The institutes linked to the University of London Senate House appear under London.
