DSc: David Jones, scientific consultant, writer and broadcaster; George Metakides, professor of logic at the University of Patras, Greece and director of ESPRIT.

MA: Alison Kay, founder of The People's Kitchen Limited (providing care for the homeless in Newcastle).

University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology DEng: William Mather, former president of UMIST and chairman of Mather and Platt; Stewart Miller, director of engineering and technology at Rolls Royce and chairman of Loughborough University's council.

DSc: Walter Bodmer, former director of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, principal of Hertford College, Oxford; Brian Heron, former chairman of the university's council.

MSc: Mick Hucknall, musician.

University of the Western Cape

Basil Davidson's honorary degree (Noticeboard, June 13) was awarded by the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. The ceremony was held at the University of Bristol.
