DSc: Brian Corby, retiring chancellor, former chief executive of the Prudential Assurance Company and the first chairman of the Association of British Insurers, president of the CBI (1990-92); Barbara Webber, president of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care and chairman of the Chest Physiotherapy Group in the European Respiratory Society; Mary McClymont, education officer for the Queen's Institute of District Nursing, and organiser of the health visitor course at Stevenage College which provided the foundation for the specialist nursing practice offered at the university.

DLitt: Barry Norman, cinema critic and television presenter.

LLD: Christopher Staughton, lord justice of appeal, former recorder of the Crown Court and judge of the High Court of justice, author of many articles on the use of English in the law; Gurney Murcer, former chairman of the university's board of governors and of Thomas Mercer Ltd.

DSc: G. Beale, former Royal Society research professor in the department of genetics, currently professor at the University of Edinburgh.

Coventry University

MA: Fred Coultas, managing director of the Heritage Motor Centre.

Glasgow Caledonian University

LLD: Gerald McGrath, local and regional councillor in Glasgow, who has served as chairman of Strathclyde International, City of Glasgow European and International Affairs Committee.
