The Legacy of Independence: South Asia 1947-1997
A series of four lectures, organised in association with The Times Higher Education Supplement, with support from City University, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Indian subcontinent.
Monday November 10, 5.30pm: "India - End of the First Republic", Professor Lord Desai, director, Centre for the Study of Global Governance, LSE.
Monday November 17, 5.30pm: "The South Asian Story - A Study in Contradiction", Professor S. R. Osmani, University of Ulster.
Monday November 24, 5.30pm: "Contrasting Visions - Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru and the West", Andrew Robinson, literary editor, The THES.
Monday December 1, 5.30pm: "Imagining India", Nayantara Sahgal, novelist and journalist.
All lectures take place at Gresham College, Barnard's Inn Hall, Holborn, London EC1.
