SIXTY-SIX institutions were in deficit in 1995/96, according to figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency, 15 more than in 1994/95. HESA's new reference volume, Resources of Higher Education Institutions 1995/96, found that the 181 reporting institutions recorded a collective net surplus of Pounds 112 million. Higher education attracted Pounds 1.5 billion from research grants and contracts, and total income and expenditure in the sector exceeded Pounds 10 billion for the first time. Staffing levels rose by 10 per cent to a total of 126,582. Women make up only 32 per cent of staff.
