David Holmes, registrar and secretary of the University of Birmingham, has been appointed registrar from July 1. He will succeed A. Dorey.

Caroline Malone, fellow of New Hall and tutor in archaeology at the board of continuing education, has been appointed editor of the Cambridge-based international journal and is the first woman to hold this post.
The Royal Society
John Dowell, Poynting professor of physics at the University of Birmingham, has been re-elected to the council and appointed vice president of the society.
Swindon College
Stephen Griffiths, principal of Halesowen College, has been appointed principal and chief executive from April 1, 1998.
He succeeds the late Clive Brain.
