Arts initiative axed

Plans to create a national federal university of the arts have been shelved by the UK Arts and Design Institutions' Association. Vaughan Grylls, Ukadia chairman and director of the Kent Institute of Art and Design, said the idea was no longer attractive because many specialist arts institutions either had gained degree-awarding powers or had strengthened their position by joining a regional alliance.
