Oxford has also this week made a great step forward for womankind. University proctors have decided to extend to women the previously male-only privilege of carrying their mortarboards, rather than wearing them, at university ceremonies.
The spectacle of toppling boards as curtsies and bows are attempted prompted the rethink. The move earned overwhelming support for its equality value, though there was a tinge of regret for the lost entertainment.
