Arnold Schwarzenegger was not the only winner in the California elections. Opponents of a proposal to prevent public universities from collecting information about the ethnic origins of individuals were also celebrating.
Proposition 54, also known as the "Racial Privacy Initiative", was the brainchild of a University of California regent, Ward Connerly, who insists that categorising people by race encourages prejudice. Proposition 54's critics said the initiative would prevent them from improving anti-discriminatory policies.
