Three London universities have appointed new vice-chancellors.

Malcolm Gillies is joining City University from the Australian National University. Professor Gillies, who is based principally in the US at Yale University, will take up the post in London in August.

The University of East London has appointed Martin Everett, currently pro vice-chancellor at Westminster University and director of the university's research strategy. He will join the UEL in April.

Peter John, deputy vice-chancellor at Plymouth University, will become vice-chancellor of Thames Valley University this summer. He will join in July.

Meanwhile, Plymouth's other deputy vice-chancellor, Mark Cleary, has been appointed acting vice-chancellor with immediate effect, after the death of vice-chancellor Roland Levinsky. However, Professor Cleary will leave Plymouth in May to become vice-chancellor of Bradford University.
