Sarah Cowley, senior lecturer, has been appointed to the newly established chair of nursing practice and evaluation; David Ganz, formerly at the University of North Carolina, United States, has been appointed to the chair of palaeography; Ian Norman, senior lecturer, has been appointed to the chair of nursing studies.

The following have been appointed to personal chairs: Janet Askham, senior research fellow in the Age Concern Institute of Gerontology; Robert Blackburn, reader in public law; Clive Bush, reader in American Literature; Christopher Dandeker, senior lecturer in war studies; Michael Holwill, reader in biophysics; Gareth Jones, reader in cell biology; Giovannie Mann, reader in physiology; Yuri Safarov, reader in mathematics; Peter Williams, senior lecturer in zoology.
