Senator Amanda Vanstone, Australia's Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, recalled with relish at the opening dinner that she had threatened, when she had responsibility for higher education, that if the vice-chancellors did not stop pleading poverty she would publish the details of the hotel in Malta they had stayed at for another Commonwealth meeting.
