John Beddington has been confirmed as the Government's Chief Scientific Adviser. He currently holds the chair in applied population biology at Imperial College's division of biology. He joined Imperial as a reader in 1984 and was promoted to professor in 1991. He was head of the department of environmental science and technology from 2001 to 2004.
