Equally baffled by technology was the Royal Society of Edinburgh, which has an ingenious heating system whereby cold air is sucked into the building, warmed up, and blown into its lecture theatre. The system was two-thirds effective this week: that is, a balmy three degrees Celsius was inhaled from outside and blasted straight at the participants in a symposium on technology transfer between higher education and industry.
