Cuts to the Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme have been restored following a meeting of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The grant for 1996/97 will be Pounds 10 million, redressing a cut to Pounds 8.25 million. The scheme, set up in 1979 in order to help attract the best overseas research students, provides the most able students with awards equal to the difference between the full overseas tuition fee and that charged to home and EU students.
