Scandinavia is not as tolerant of queer studies as UK academics might believe, according to participants at a recent University College London debate.
While Sweden has thriving queer and gender studies departments in all its universities, Denmark has one gender studies department in the whole country, according to Dag Heede of the University of Southern Denmark. He said there had been an outcry in the country when he attempted to "queer" national treasure Hans Christian Anderson.
