Three Tajik rebels have been sentenced to death by firing squad for the murder of Yomura Akino, a Japanese expert on the former Soviet Union from Tsukuba University who was seconded to the United Nations observer team monitoring the deal to end Tajikistan's civil war. Three other observers also died in the ambush in July 1998.
