Essex University departments will be set targets for expenditure cuts or increased income to avert losses projected for the university in the late 1990s. A gap of about Pounds 1 million per year will have to be bridged. Ron Johnson, vice chancellor, said job losses were unlikely, although some vacancies might not be filled.
