A demand for higher levels of national government funding to support university teaching and research is at the centre of the Glasgow Declaration finalised this week by the European University Association.
The declaration, drawn up in the aftermath of the EUA convention in Glasgow earlier this month, says Europe's universities are not sufficiently funded and cannot be expected to compete with other systems without comparable levels of funding.
