The ESF scientific network 'Exploring the Deep Sub-Seafloor Biosphere' is offering a number of travel grants to scientists wishing to initiate or to further develop a collaborative project related to the network objectives which emphasis three major areas for research:
1. The extent, distribution and diversity of the deep biosphere in marine sediments and rocks.
2. Potential energy sources for the deep biosphere and their impact on geochemistry, mineralogy and ultimately oil and gas generation (inc. gas hydrate deposits).
3. Evaluation of the biotechnological potential of the deep subsurface biosphere.
Grants are intended for short visits to initiate or strengthen links between different research groups to enable joint research projects to be prepared. Applications in the above areas are particularly welcome, however, initiatives concerning other aspects of the Sub-Seafloor Biosphere will also be considered. Priority will be given to projects involving collaboration between different European research groups and different disciplines. Full application details available on line.
