HESA findings for 1996-97 reveal that:

* Male first-degree graduates are almost twice as likely to study for a higher degree by research (18 per cent of men compared with 10 per cent of women).

* 54 per cent of female first-degree graduates who continued study undertook postgraduate diplomas, including PGCEDs, compared with 37 per cent of men.
