Four is really five

There are not four but five ancient Scottish universities ("Fat is a student issue", THES, November 20). There has been a university in Dundee for about 500 years and as such we were long ago awarded ancient status. But St Andrews University, or East Fife Technical College as it is often referred to, chose to break away.

Much has been said about the propriety of awarding St Andrews ancient status, especially in light of its relative modernity and rather limited subject range, but it was felt that it had many of the specialist features that are shared by the rest of us and as such we decided to include it.
