GLASGOW University has signed a lease for premises for a new college in Dumfries that could evolve into an independent university of the south-west of Scotland early next century. Crichton College will be housed on the site of the former Crichton Royal psychiatric hospital. It will use distance learning techniques and most students are expected to take three-year general degrees.
