Colin Dexter, creator of Oxford sleuth Inspector Morse, has received an honorary doctorate of letters from Oxford Brookes University. Other recent honorary degrees awarded by the university include: Sir Herman Ouseley, chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (DLitt); journalist and author Beatrix Campbell (DLitt); former director of Oxford's Museum of Modern Art David Elliott (DArts); and Tom Walkingshaw, managing director of the Arrows Grand Prix team (DEng).

Cary Cooper, professor of clinical psychology at UMIST's school of management and pro vice-chancellor external affairs, has become the first academic based outside the United States to win the annual distinguished service award of the American Academy of Management.

David Lax, senior lecturer in applied sciences, University of Teesside, has won a Pounds 60,000 European Commission CRAFT award under the stimulation for SMEs industrial and materials technologies programme.
