Glittering prizes

Vaclav Havel, president of the Czech Republic, received the degree of doctor of civil law by diploma from Oxford University yesterday. The title is only conferred upon heads of state and members of royal families.

Bilingual broadcaster and journalist Oliver Todd, the former editor of L'Express, has been awarded the honorary degree of doctor of letters by the University of the West of England. The title is in recognition of his contribution to the understanding of European culture.

Steve Molyneux, who holds the IBM chair of interactive communication technologies at the University of Wolverhampton, has been awarded a visiting fellowship by international computing company ICL.

Meziane Lasfer, reader in finance and director of the PhD programme in accounting and finance at City University business school, has received the first annual Pounds 2,000 dean's prize for teaching excellence, instituted by business school dean Leslie Hannah.

David Hickson, research professor of international management and organisation at the University of Bradford's management centre, has been made the first honorary member of the European Group of Organisational Studies.
