Glittering prizes

The Wiener Library, London, has awarded Robert Moeller the 1999 Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History for his work War Stories: The Search for a Usable Past in the Federal Republic of Germany. Till van Rahden received the prize for entrants who have yet to publish a major work.

Brian Skyrms, professor at the University of California, Irvine, has been awarded this year's Pounds 10,000 Lakatos Award for an outstanding contribution to the philosophy of science. He wins the award for his book Evolution of the Social Contract.

Footballer Sir Geoff Hurst has become an honorary

doctor of Anglia Polytechnic

University.

Roderick Floud, vice-president of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals, has been made an honorary doctor of literature by City University.

The University of Abertay, Dundee, has awarded honorary degrees to Sir Graham Hills, founder of the University of the Highlands and Islands Project and former principal of Strathclyde University, and to bestselling crime novelist, Ian Rankin.

Coventry University has awarded an honorary degree to Beverley Nielsen, regional director of the West Midlands Confederation of British Industry and Richard Parham, former managing director of Peugeot.

Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, has presented honorary degrees to actor and broadcaster Tom Fleming and Anne Jarvie, chief nursing officer and director of nursing at the Scottish Office department of health.
