* Honours degree classifications will be remembered as "quaint relics of academic indulgence" long before the children of current graduates come to university, said Jeffrey Sanderson, vice-principal of St Andrews University, at a graduation ceremony. He condemned degree classifications as an "unjust" Victorian invention and said there was a widespread conviction throughout higher education that they were past their sell-by date.
