While, after Cubie, students anticipate the financial benefits of being Scottish, graduates may disagree. Cubie's proposal for a "Scottish graduate endowment foundation" includes the suggestion that "prior beneficiaries of the higher education system" will be encouraged to contribute. It will be interesting to see which prior beneficiaries take up this suggestion if these proposals are introduced. Will Liverpool vice-chancellor Philip Love, or Nottingham v-c Colin Campbell, both graduates of Aberdeen, fork out to help make institutions north of the border more attractive than their own? And will chancellor of the exchequer and Edinburgh University graduate Gordon Brown consider giving his alma mater the odd fiver altogether prudent?
