New mobile-phone software has been developed by academics at Imperial College London to allow scientists to collect and record data when they are out in the field. The application, known as EpiCollect and developed for smartphones thanks to funding from the Wellcome Trust, allows scientists to send information to a central web-based database that will also record their location. The technology could enable members of the public to act as "citizen scientists" by helping to collect data for community projects.
