Imperial College, London, has been fined £20,000 for breaching safety regulations at an HIV laboratory.
The college was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive after an inspection found that one of its laboratories at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital could not be properly sealed during fumigations.
The laboratory was testing HIV therapies, but the college stressed that there had never been a risk of the virus escaping.
