Banned religious students could be reinstated if Turkey's parliament passes a proposed amnesty for all women students barred for wearing headscarves in line with Islamic practice. The country's coalition government is considering the amnesty after a year during which universities reinforced tough dress codes intended to protect the country's 76-year-old secular state. Several hundred students have been banned from universities, prompting nationwide demonstrations.
