A Pounds 3 million research project is coming to the end of its three-year quest to find ways to reduce the noise generated by aircraft. At least one potential solution has been unearthed by experts from Salford University who have worked with industrialists around the world, including nearby Rolls Royce. According to Peter Wheeler, head of the deparment of acoustics at Salford, their recommendations will include improvements to the acoustic liners in aircraft fan housings. A dozen new designs were tested in the research which drew on the experience of manufacturers from seven countries.
