The University of Glasgow has named Andy Schofield, currently vice-chancellor of Lancaster University, as its next principal.

Professor Schofield will join Glasgow in September 2025, taking up the post on the retirement of Sir Anton Muscatelli, who has led the institution since 2009.

The theoretical physicist has led Lancaster since 2020 and before that held a series of senior roles at the University of Birmingham, ending up as pro vice-chancellor and head of the College of Engineering and Physical Science. He spent much of his early career as a research fellow at the University of Cambridge.

Gavin Stewart, Glasgow’s convenor of court, said he was “delighted” with the appointment.

“Professor Schofield has an exceptional academic record, along with the strategic vision and extensive leadership experience required to open the next successful chapter in our long and distinguished history,” he said.

Under Sir Anton’s leadership, Glasgow has developed its research activity and its global links, now boasting more than 11,000 staff and an economic impact estimated at £4.4 billion annually.

Professor Schofield said that it was a “great honour” to take over at the helm of the institution.

“Glasgow is an impressive, world-changing institution which has made huge strides under Sir Anton’s leadership. I very much look forward to building on his legacy and working with a brilliant set of colleagues to take the university forward,” Professor Schofield said.
