Education minister quits to take on Italian government
Italian premier Giuliano Amato has taken over the universities ministry following the resignation of its minister Ortensio Zecchino, who is to campaign for a new political party - Democrazia Europea - in April’s general election. The party will not be part of the coalition that supports the government.

Ecuadorean hunger strikers occupy university
One hundred of an estimated 5,000 Ecuadorean Indians who have been occupying the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana in Quito since January 26 have gone on hunger strike in protest at economic measures introduced by president Guatavo Noboa. They are demanding the repeal of price increases in food, fuel and transport.

Student may sue professor who called her Monica Lewinsky
A judge has decided that a former State University of New York student can sue her professor for sexual harassment for calling her Monica Lewinsky. The court ruled that the professor’s remarks could be considered sexual harassment and allowed the case to proceed.
