Belarus arrests American on drugs charges
Charles Daniel Periello, director of the Minsk office of ACCELS, a division of the American Councils, which sponsors university exchanges and professional training in Eastern Europe and former Soviet states, was arrested last Thursday on charges related to drug trafficking. As September's presidential race nears, President Alexander Lukashenko has alleged that foreign-funded organisations are giving unauthorised support to would-be candidates.

Mexican clashes result in five arrests
Five students were injured and arrested when police used teargas and batons to halt weekend clashes at the Universidad Autónoma “Benito Juárez” in Oaxaca, 300km southeast of Mexico City. Trouble began when more than 1,000 students who had been holding a general assembly turned on a group of hecklers, setting fire to the university’s law and social sciences faculty and damaging the main building.
