Wider participation may reinforce social exclusion
The government's widening participation policies may have the unintended consequence of reinforcing social exclusion, according to research published today. Penny Jane Burke, of the Institute of Education, London, said that many who made it to university without traditional A-level qualifications felt left out because universities remained geared mainly to meeting the needs of school leavers with A levels.

Cornish university initiative gets underway
The £96.3 million Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative will take another step forwards today as Exeter University and Falmouth College of Arts sign an agreement to operate jointly the Tremough campus at Penryn. The agreement establishes a board responsible for overseeing the development and running of the site at Tremough. Exeter University students and staff will move to the Falmouth College Campus in 2004.
