Female academics earn a fifth less than male colleagues
Female academics earn almost 20 per cent less than their male colleagues, according to a survey by the Association of University Teachers. It found full-time male academics earned on average £669 gross a week in 2000 and their female counterparts earned £113 a week less.

Equality Challenge appoints first director
Joyce Hill, pro vice-chancellor of Leeds University, has been appointed the first director of the higher education Equality Challenge Unit from August 1. The unit is funded by higher education agencies and aims to increase equal opportunities in the sector.

Consultation looks at improving teacher training
A consultation on teacher training will look at how trainee teachers can be better equipped to teach ethnically diverse classes and deal with problem behaviour. New requirements are being drafted and a public consultation starts in June.
