Luton crisis escalates
Luton University is facing strike action and a national academic boycott as the extent of its financial crisis emerges. Luton, which plans to cut almost 100 academic jobs and abandon disciplines such as history and English, is suffering from a student recruitment shortfall that could leave it facing a £3 million funding-council clawback.

Scotland preempts repeat exam debacle
The Scottish Qualifications Authority has confirmed there will be a week’s delay in this year’s examination results to avoid a repeat of last year’s fiasco. But Scottish higher education institutions will still get advance warning to prepare them for applicant queries.

Exeter sets lawyers on TTA
The University of Exeter has started legal proceedings against the Teacher Training Agency after it threatened to withdraw its accreditation of the university. The TTA began the procedures after the university’s four-year BEd course received a poor Ofsted report.
