Physics head quits over job losses
The head of physics at Queen Mary, University of London, has quit in protest against job losses in the department. Peter Clegg resigned after four senior staff members who left the department were not replaced. The department will lose its instrumentation development group and six or seven other positions over five years.
St Andrews wins £2.3m for drugs research
Scientists at St Andrews University’s centre for biomolecular sciences have won £2.3 million from the Joint Infrastructure Fund to search for new drugs to combat illnesses ranging from tuberculosis to foot-and-mouth disease.
Hull opens centre for applied mathematics
Hull University will inaugurate a new institute of applied mathematics today. The Hull Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Applications will emphasise continuum mechanics and fluid dynamics.
