Drummond Bone, Liverpool University vice-chancellor and president of Universities UK, has announced he will retire next summer.
Professor Bone told staff last week that his five-year contract with Liverpool was due to end this summer. He said that he had been offered a rolling contract as vice-chancellor of Liverpool but that he had decided to stand down from next summer. He said he would not seek another vice-chancellorship.
