The Student Loans Bill, which allows private lenders to receive Government subsidies to offer student loans, received Royal Assent this week. The Government hopes the first private loans will be available by September 1997. Eric Forth, the higher education minister, said: "The Act will enable choice, diversity and competition to be brought into the loans system."
